Open flight maps

Post by piloti »

Hallo,

Vielen Dank vorab.

Euer Piloti.

IMHO, the easyest way is:
1) get this map in .pdf format
2) Open it in GlobalMapper program and ajust coordinates
3) change map projection to Geografic (WGS84) an export map image into GeoTIFF format
4) convert GeoTIFF image to RMP map using Triton RMP Maker or Antalos RMPCreator

Unfortunately, there are 2 problems;
1) my PC is to old, and GlobalMapper returns 'Out of memory" error when I open one of this maps
2) I do not know the datum and projection of this maps. I think, it is "WGS84" and "Lambert Conic"

Hello,
today I've tried it several times with the unregistered version of the software "GlobaMapper", but I got everytime the same error during the upload of a pdf file:

Unable to open pdf file c:\......
Unable to load PDF file
PDFOverlay.cpp - 3710
Version: v14.2.0 (32-bit)
Build time: May 22 2013 14:47:03
Use Ctrl+V to Paste Error
Ok

Thanks for your idea. Or do you have another way to import a pdf file into T2000?

Hallo,

Vielen Dank vorab
Best regards

I think that this PDF file is too big for GlobalMaper running at 32-bit Windows XP. I found a solution for this problem.
Open PDF file in PhotoShop (it takes approx. one hour :( ).
Save it as TIFF image without layers. Use LZW compression.

Note: map projection is not Lambert Conic. I suppose, it is UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator). Do not forget to select appropriate zone and hemisphere.

Here is a sample of converted map.
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/JxhE/AJNurZvZX
NOTE. It is a sample. Map coordinates are not very accurate. White borders are not cuted.
This map is visible at my eXplorist 610 at zoom levels "4.8km", "3.2km" (best), "2.4km", "1.6km", "1.2 km", "800m",

Here is a link to Antalos RMPCreator http://antalos.com/en/gps/rmp-creator.php

Before you export your map into GeoTIFF format, do not forget to change map projection to Geografic (Lat/Lon)
When you export your map from GlobalMapper to GeoTIFF use the folloving options:
File type: 24-bit RGB
Resample: Bicubic Interpolation
Disable "Always generate Square Pixels" option (it is important!)
Click on "Click Here to Calculate Spacing In Other Units" button.
Choose Units: meters from dropdown list
Change both values to "40.5" (this value is practically optimal for "3.2km" zoom level and 48..49 degrees of latitude). Click OK OK. Type new name for GeoTiff file. Do not overwrite existent one.

Note about RMPCreator.
Do not use internal map scale calculator of RMPCreator. Just open your GeoTIFF file, write "Map Provider" (i.e.
openflightmap) and "Map Group" (i.e. "Germany") and click "Create map" button.

Of cource, you can use small and free STDUviewer http://www.stdutility.com/stduviewer.html instead of ugly PhotoShop.
Just open a PDF file (Menu - File - Open) and make export operation (Menu - File - export - to image). Choose format "PNG image" and resolution 300 dpi.

Ok. I'll try to ajust, merge and convert to RMP format that 8 maps of Germany.
The process of ajustment and merging this maps is too boring.
Next time ask OFM team for maps in GeoTIFF format, not PDF.

Done.
Here are two maps of Germany (40 meters per pixel and 60 m/pixel). Packed into 137 MB zip archive.

Hello,

I've create the png-file via STDUviewer, but I'm unable to create the rmp-file afterwards. Which software did you use?

Thanks for your help.

Use GlobalMapper for map coordinates ajustment (rectification)
http://www.globalmapper.com/helpv9/Help ... ation.html
NOTE: Map rectification is a manual process. You must manually set some control points on map image and type coordinates of them.
Change map projection (change to Geografic(Lat/Lon) and WGS84) using GlobalMapper.
http://globalmapper.com/helpv11/Help_Co ... projection
And for export into GeoTIFF format
http://globalmapper.com/helpv11/Help_Me ... rt_geotiff

Use Antalos RMPCreator for convertation GeoTIFF to RMP.
NOTE: Every GeoTIFF file must not be large than approx. 200MB. If a map is too big, you must split it into small pieces (Click "Gridding" tab at "GeoTIFF export options" window and choose splitting options) before export process from GlobalMapper to GeoTIFF.

Is it correct, that I need the registered version of GM? I don't find the link to "Export GeoTIFF Command" in the unregistered version.

Ok. There is an alternative for GlobalMapper. This is QGIS http://www.qgis.org/de/site/
I have tried to use it, but I could not rectify and convert a sample of scanned map sheet. The resulting GeoTIFF map image file is incorrect.
May be I do something wrong...
So, the free alternative for proprietary GM is only hacked GM :) But it is, of course, illegal

Hello Dimonster2,

thanks for the honest words.......

I would like to do the easiest way for me: downloading the map from https://cloud.mail.ru/public/........, so I do not need the hacked version. Can I ask you in app. 6 months about a new map again?

Thanks for your support. I've tried the map on T2000 already during flights - it's awesome!!!! Thanks again for your help.

Your piloti.
