Achtung: Interner Akku eXplorist 110/GC/310

Post by S1G »

Also für Elektronik Steinalt.

Satz Acku dazwischen gerutscht.

I have some information about this problem (from a local specialist).
1) There is only one memory chip (MLC flash by Samsung, 2GB) inside. No additional EEPROM.
2) Flash chips do not need an electrical power to store an information, but only for writing and reading procedures.
3) The true reason of this problem is not the discharged internal battery, but a defective flash memory chip. There was a same problem with some automobile GPS devices, i.e. "SHUTTLE". That GPS device worked fine during one year and then refused to start. Fortunately there was an ability to flash the firmware from SD card. After flashing procedure the device worked fine during a half of year and then refused to start again. Finally the internal flash chip became full of bad blocks and was replaced by local electronic service-center.

4) The internal battery is rechargable. And I suppose that this battery was placed there for: 1. To get the power for internal clock (and may be GPS chip too) when you change the AA batteries. 2. To give the device an ability to correctly finish it's work when the main electric power was accidentally lost (i.e. batteries was removed without shutdown procedure).

Hallo dimonster2,

thank you for sharing this information. But I would not derive the same conclusion from the fact that no EEPROM exists. There is processor-RAM, and if vital information is stored in it, a power interruption could cause the death of the unit. I wonder if your local specialist has interrupted the internal battery supply and then afterwards could restart the unit? That would be a real proof of the theory. Has he performed such an experiment?

Greetings

It is not so easy. That specialist is busy, and I can not make this experiment by myself.
But I can tell about the same case with automobile navigator. There was a GPS with bad Li-Ion internal battery. This battery swelled and I had to remove it at all. The navigator still be able to work with external power supply and without internal battery. But one day the owner of that navigator accidentally break the power by ejecting power supply adapter from it's socket. Unfortunately, the navigation software performed writing data to flash drive at that moment. So, that written data became corrupted, and that navigation application was unable to start next time. But the WindowsCE operation system was still alive. I replaced the battery, reinstalled the navigation application, and navigator is still working. That was a "noname" automobile GPS from China. The battery was "non-removable", but it was actually soldered to mainboard by two wires, and I replaced it by Li-Ion battery from Nokia mobile phone.
Unfortunately, the internal battery in eXplorist is soldered directly into mainboard and is too small. I can not remove it using knife, screwdriver and daddy's big soldering-iron.

Hello dimonster2,

thank you for this clarification. An experiment with interrupting the battery may kill the unit if vital information is stored in RAM - so it is a risky experiment. I for myself conclude from the lack of reliable information that it is a good idea to keep a charged battery in the unit all the time (to keep the internal battery charged). Also I use the GPS at least every 2 or 3 month. This would not be necessary if there would be proof that the GPS starts after disconnecting the internal battery. If a circuit diagram were available, it would be possible to judge under what conditions the internal battery is charged. But so far I was unable to find a circuit diagram.

Greetings

Note that batteries may discharged and leak inside a GPS device if it stored for very long time, and metal contacts in battery compartment may corrode.
By the way, the JungleGhost (who are a the source of this info) propose the service for replacement for corroded contacts. ;)
